A search was underway Saturday in Irvine for an inmate who escaped from the James A. Musick Facility, authorities said.

Max Edward Fernandez, 27, turned up missing during a security check at the facility Friday evening, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

Fernandez had been in custody for possession of stolen property and a narcotics violation, the Sheriff's department said.

He was described as white, 5 feet 8 inches tall, and weighs 170 pounds.

Fernandez has brown hair, brown eyes and several tattoos including a tribal band on his upper right arm. He has a skull on his upper right back, and a USMC with a hammer head shark on his left tricep, the Sheriff's department said in a press release.

He was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt and red shorts under a pair of gray sweat pants, and may have been injured or cut during the escape, according to the Sheriff's department.
